If you want to give your doubles a good solid workout, and increase your dexterity, then here’s a great exercise for you!

This one I vaguely remember learning from Steve Smith’s Drumset Technique DVD. It’s a while ago now, so I’m not even sure if this is the original, or whether it’s my own adaptation of it. If it is the original, then credit to Steve for such a solid, concise warmup.

Exercise 1 is a combination of straight doubles and inverted doubles. Exercise 2 is doubles interspersed with singles to extend the pattern to 8 bars.

Start at 80bpm and focus on making the pattern as smooth and relaxed as possible. Then gradually increase the tempo by 5bpm increments. STAY RELAXED! If you feel tension in your arms, slow back down a notch until it goes away, then increase the tempo again.

If you want to build endurance, practice these exercises on a pillow or rolled-up towel. This will really help you to achieve consistent stroke velocity across your doubles.
